Programme overview

The popularity of this programme reflects the excellent employment opportunities for graduates.
Two strands are available.

- If you are looking for a career in either the residential or commercial construction field, and enjoy working outdoors and pulling together big elements to build a structure, then the Carpentry strand is for you.

- If you would like to work on panel products and the wooden components of buildings like stairs, kitchens, doors and fittings, if you have an eye for detail and working with precise measurements, the Joinery strand is for you.

The programme is supported by the Industry Training Association Building (ITaB) scheme and the BCITO.

As a graduate, you will be qualified to work as entry-level construction site workers, pre-cut factory workers, and in the retail sector of the building and construction industry. Your tutors are licenced building practitioners and NMIT is also involved with New Zealand Certified Builders, Master Builders and Master Joiners. NMIT students are strongly represented in the regional and national Apprentice of the Year competitions. This qualification will assist you in obtaining an apprenticeship.
