This is the entry level Maritime New Zealand license for you to be able to operate as a Skipper of a small vessel.
You need to complete the 18 week online course, and complete the Training Record Book and have 200 hours sea service before attending a block course on the Nelson campus.
With SRL, you can perform a skipper’s (master’s) functions and duties on passenger and non-passenger ships less than 12 metres length overall, carrying up to 19 passengers within restricted limits (which includes both enclosed and inshore limits) and on fishing vessels less than 12 metres length overall, in enclosed and inshore fishing limits. Once you have your SRL license, you can progress to larger vessels.
This programme covers: navigation, commercial maritime knowledge, survival training, fire fighting, electronic navigation systems, maritime radiotelephone operator certificate, first aid and engineering.
The structure of the SRL programme is a combination of distance learning and a set of block courses towards the end of your programme. Most students take 4-6 months to gain their seatime, complete the online/distance learning assessments, complete their Training Record Book, and attend all the training block courses.
